To Fowey

We had blocked 2 weeks in our busy calendar for a cruise to and around Falmouth. Other commitments started to snip away at this time. A weather window appeared for today and tomorrow. 

Left Plymouth Yacht Haven, our base, at 09:15, 45 mins early. The detail is in our written boat log. Suffice to say it was a disappointing passage, due to lack of forecast wind and lumpy sea. We motorsailed 80% of the time. 

Off Penlee Point we had 3 Risso's dolphins with us for 10 mins. They are big and very blunt nosed with characteristic white marks. Such a heart-lifting sight. No, we didn't think to get a pic.

We didn't want to be far up river, so Fowey Harbour directed us to visitor buoys in Pont Pill near the shore, suitable for small boats. Good position but rather rolly. Confused the young men taking payment later because we'd last been here in Sirena IV; they charged us for 35 feet, then came back to apologise. 

Had a pleasant evening, esp as the sea state calmed.

Sunday: Here's a lovely yacht. Got up in time to deliver Lesley to Fowey Parish church in time for a 9am Sunday service.  The vicar Carol was from Lancashire, and it turned out she and Lesley had both been taken on a school visit to a sewage farm. Weird but true. Nic went for a walk and discovered another lovely Fowey garden, the Plantation garden, and a pub we might try next time (!). We had coffee and cheese straws, and a wander, before we took a final watertaxi back to Sirena V. The wind in the Fowey river is fluky as hell. We had to switch direction while putting up the reefed mainsail, as the wind whipped around us. We got out into the Channel and set off on a bumpy downwind ride. And sailed for 6 hours, all the way to Plymouth. Once back on our home berth, there was a mass of stuff including unworn clothes and uneaten food to carry off the boat. We packed it in the car and staggered into the marina restaurant for fish and chips, where the world is still going round and round....

Falmouth day

Forecast showed too much wind for sailing, and so we earned a rest day. Leisurely shower, the facilities score a rare 10 out of 10 given to door btw the water and our clothes ... and Radio 3 piped in. Porridge in boat lovely although the washup is a challenge.  Spent the day in Falmouth. Luckily for L, the charity shops open on a Sunday. N did a lot of exploring and boat watching. Only people sailing in the strong wind were the intrepid gaffers - it's thick with them here. There are also quite a few Shrimpers on moorings, even a 21 which is comparatively rare. Had last of ydays sandwiches on the pier, the Pier Cafe for a coffee and scone/cake topup. Bought another phone charging pad because N dropped the first one and it stopped working! Went to Phoenix cinema in the afternoon, to see Salt Path. It was good, but highly selective inevitably. Early doors

 We left Fowey before 0700, and put a reefed main up on the buoy, a first time for that. We were motoring into mist and mizzle. Thank heaven the seas had abated overnight. There was no wind to speak of so we resigned ourselves to motorsailing.  Off Dodman point, we realised there was enough wind to sail. At first it was fine sailing, then rain set in and the wind died after an hour and a half. Back to motoring. When the wind came back, it was dead ahead so we motored through gaffers racing at hair raising speed, past St Anthony Head and into busy Falmouth harbour.  We made for the Haven marina, refurbished and expensive, and found a good berth alongside. Later we warped the boat around to avoid the forecast big winds blowing into the cockpit. Nic had forgotten to bring an essential bit of kit - a wireless charger for his phone whose charging port is kaput. So off we went to a phone shop and got another to be kept aboard.
